Yoga and Animal Ethics – A new volume in the Palgrave Macmillan Animal Ethics book series.
Welcome to an exceptional opportunity . . .
. . . to join efforts to make caring for animals in the spirit of mindful, awakened living a serious topic of discussion—in the burgeoning universe of yoga practitioners and thoughtful people worldwide. Especially students, teachers, and life coaches concerned with environmentalism in its multiple dimensions and appalled at the rampant destruction of our animal kin will be able to access this book in digital form at no cost. You can help make this a central topic of deep deliberation and broad discussion.
Your valued contribution will help meet the publisher’s fees for OPEN ACCESS for making widely available, as a completely free and legal ebook download, a groundbreaking, well-researched book by H. H. Krishna Kshetra Swami (Dr. Kenneth Valpey, a research fellow at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies [ https://ochs.org.uk ; https://kennethvalpey.com ]). This digital edition of the book will become available through the prestigious academic publisher Palgrave Macmillan on its Open Access (OA) publishing platform.
For the first time in Western academic publishing, Yoga and Animal Ethics speaks exclusively and in great detail to educated, thoughtful readers about the immense value of yoga-based philosophy and practices as a solid theoretical and applied basis for approaching the deep challenges surrounding human involvement with animals—the subject of animal ethics.
Krishna Kshetra Swami notes, “Following the great success of my book Cow Care in Hindu Animal Ethics (63,000 downloads to date because of its Open Access status*) I have been invited by the Palgrave Macmillan Animal Ethics** book series editor, Prof. Andrew Linzey, to prepare a second book for the same series.
"To make this book widely accessible, the publisher offers an Open Access licensing option, for which funding is required. To raise this funding is my purpose, needed by January 30, 2025, when the book goes to press. The total, one-time amount required for a monograph (a book of academic research) to be published under an Open Access license with this publisher is $17,000.”***
>Everyone who donates $100 will be welcome to communicate with the book's author after reading the book.
>Everyone who donates $500 will, in addition, receive a signed hardcopy of the book.
>Everyone who donates $1000 or more will, in addition to these benefits, be noted in the published book's Acknowledgements.
>But donations, however small, are of course most welcome.
*63,000 is 124 x 500. 500 to 2000 is the average number of physical copies sold of an academic (peer reviewed) book (according to an AI query). My interest is not in selling books but rather in getting a message out to as many educated, thoughtful people as possible. This is facilitated greatly by making the book freely and legally available through Open Access, which functions as a publishing license in the Creative Commons educational network. https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-28408-4
***$17,000 covers the publisher’s production costs and expected profit margin. As an Open Access book, it can be translated into other languages and published by other publishers, free of any obligation to the original publisher. At present, Cow Care in Hindu Animal Ethics is soon to be published in Russian, Mandarin, Hindi, Spanish, and German. We aim to have Yoga and Animal Ethics become similarly available in several languages. This is also facilitated by Open Access, because the publisher puts no restrictions or charges on publishing the book in other languages.
