There are two places where content editors should insert the number of shastra verse(s) for classes:
The lecture title
Here are the recommended format examples for standard shastra classes:
The "Verse" input field
The main purpose of the Shastra / Canto / Chapter / Verse input fields is to automatically create a workable link to a particular verse which exists at Bhaktivedanta Vedabase pages (https://vedabase.io/).
Single-linked and multiple-linked Vedabase verses
Verses inside Vedabase exist either as single verse links or multiple verse links.
The policy of the Bhaktivedanta Vedabase is that it follows strictly the Srila Prabhupada's books layout. So, if some verses are combined together in some SP book they are combined together at the matching Vedabase link as well.
For example... Srimad-Bhagavatam verse SB 8.22.29 does not exist as Vedabase link because it is combined together with the verse no.30. So, these two links do not exist as the Vedabase pages:
https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/8/22/29/
https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/8/22/30/
If you try to click at any of the links above you will get the Vedabase "Page not Found" response.
However, this link DOES exist:
https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/8/22/29-30/
Example:
Let's say you need to add Shastra / Canto / Chapter / Verse information for a lecture given on series of SB verses from 8.22.24 to 8.22.30. How to do it properly?
You can (and you should) enter "8.22.24-30" into the lecture's title. In our example the title would be something like: "Srimad-Bhagavatam 8.22.24-30. ", so that visitors are properly informed about the lecture's full context.
Next...do not enter the Vedabase-not-existing "24-30" verse number into the "Verse" input field because that will result with creation of "Page not found" https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/8/22/24-30/ Vedabase link.
It is much better to enter "29-30" into the verse field instead because the visitors will be properly redirected to the https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/8/22/29-30/ page. They will be able to read Srila Prabhupada's translation and purport of these verses and they will be able to use "Previous" and "Next" Vedabase navigation buttons to read nearby verses as well. They will also be informed by the proper lecture title of all the verses they need to read.
What verse to add into the Verse field if the lecture is given on multiple verses?
In most cases the last verse is the one which has SP purport and is the most relevant for the lecture. However, if you decide to link the verse field to the first verse or some verse in the middle because they are the most relevant ones... that's up to you. The "Previous" and "Next" Vedabase navigation buttons will help visitors to find and read all nearby verses easily.
How to know what verses are linked as single verses and what verses as multiple ones inside the Vedabase pages?
If you visit the shastra's chapter summary link you will get the list of all verses inside that particular chapter. It is very easy to recognize single-linked and multiple-linked verses at the chapter summary page.
As example, here is the Bhagavad-gita Chapter 5 Summary link: https://vedabase.io/en/library/bg/5/. It is easy to note that verses 8-9 and 27-28 are multi-linked and all other verses inside this Gita chapter are single-linked.
IMPORTANT - Always TEST a new added verse link and check if it works!
After your new lecture is saved you should visit the automatically created "Verse" link and check if it works properly:
Publishing broken Vedabase links is not good for visitors and not good for search engine (Google, Bing) rating as well.
Conclusion in short
The best is to enter the full scope of verses read during the class into the lecture title field and a single and Vedabase-existing verse number into the "Verse" input field so that a proper link to the Vedabase page can be created.
